What roles do you hire for?
Commercial flat roofers
Hands-on membrane work on low-slope commercial and industrial buildings: tear-off, insulation and cover board, torch-applied and self-adhered SBS, heat-welded TPO and PVC, EPDM, base flashings, curbs, drains and perimeter detail. Experience across more than one system is valuable, and so is a willingness to learn the ones you have not done yet.
Roofing foremen
Running a crew on site: sequencing the work so no deck is left open overnight, holding the safety plan, managing material and equipment on the roof, keeping the client's building contact informed, and producing the daily record and photographs. A foreman here is the person the property manager actually talks to, so communication carries as much weight as production.
Estimators
Attending buildings, walking roofs, taking test cuts, reading decks and assemblies, measuring, specifying the assembly layer by layer and writing quotes that a property manager can hand to an owner without rewriting. Requires enough field background to know what a roof will actually cost to build rather than what a spreadsheet says.
Apprentices and labourers
Entry into the trade for people who want to learn low-slope roofing properly. Expect to start on tear-off, material handling and site cleanliness, and to be taught the detail work by the crew you are on.
How does NorthCan approach safety?
Every one of these roles works at height, and that shapes the whole operation. Our crews work to the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the working-at-heights requirements administered by Ontario's Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. In practice that means guardrails or a travel-restraint or fall-arrest system at every open edge, anchor points selected for the deck rather than for convenience, controlled access zones, and a written rescue plan on site before anyone goes up.
Where torch-applied membrane or other hot work is used, a fire watch is maintained after the torches are shut down. On industrial and institutional sites we take the client's site orientation and work inside their permit-to-work system.
Working-at-heights training must be current for anyone on the roof. If yours has lapsed, say so when you apply rather than after you are hired. Nobody at NorthCan is asked to shortcut a control to keep a programme on schedule, and anyone can stop work on a condition they believe is unsafe.
What do you look for?
- Current working-at-heights training, or the willingness to complete it before going on a roof.
- Reliability. Commercial roofing runs on early starts, weather windows and phasing. A crew member who does not turn up costs the whole crew a day.
- Care at the junctions. Anyone can lay membrane across a field. We keep the people whose base flashings, curbs and drain details still look right two winters later.
- Conduct on an occupied building. Most of our roofs have tenants underneath. Debris contained, access route respected, noise kept to the agreed window, and a civil answer to whoever asks what is happening.
- Willingness to say something is wrong. A wet deck, a bad anchor, a detail that will not hold. We would much rather hear it on the roof than on a callback two winters later.
Experience across SBS, TPO, PVC, EPDM and built-up systems is an advantage, and so is a G licence. Neither substitutes for doing the detail properly.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need previous commercial roofing experience to apply?
Not for apprentice and labourer roles, where you start on tear-off and material handling and learn the detail work on the crew. For roofer, foreman and estimator roles we need real low-slope experience, because the systems, the safety controls and the detailing are not transferable from residential shingle work.
Do you provide working-at-heights training, or do I need it already?
Anyone on a roof must have current working-at-heights training that meets Ontario's requirements. If yours has lapsed or you have never held it, tell us when you apply. Training arrangements are discussed individually rather than promised on a web page.
What are the hours like?
Early. Commercial roofing works to weather windows, and on tenanted buildings often to hours agreed with the client, which can mean pre-opening starts on retail or occasional weekend work on occupied sites. Our office hours run 06:00 to 19:00 weekdays and 09:00 to 17:00 at weekends.
Do you hire year round?
We keep crews working through the season, with the winter weighted towards repairs, emergency attendance and projects using cold-weather-suitable assemblies. Hiring follows the workload, so send your details even when nothing specific is posted and we will keep them on file.
